7. Europe’s contribution to art and culture
Cities are shaped and formed by the people who live in them. Artists have a special place and role to play in this realm. And yet, the identity of a city is shaped not only by art in urban spaces. In fact, many artists have made it their mission to work on behalf of social and political issues, thus making cities a little bit more liveable and fair for all.
Art and culture play a decisive role in shaping the urban societies of the future. Artists and cultural creatives have long since begun making significant contributions to the economic development of cities. By participating in discussions and working groups exploring issues relating to urban planning, artists are able to create a bridge between politics and emotionality, thus rendering abstract themes more visible in Europe and opening up new access to the most pressing issues. We use this approach in our Europe workshops with a particular artistic or cultural focus. For example, we offered a photo workshop in Gelsenkirchen in which participants were given the task of capturing the idea of Europe in pictures. The resulting work was then put on display in the framework of our public Open Space Europe ausgestellt.
